In Through the Out Door...

Led Zeppelin's last REAL album. In Through the Out Door was the last album that Led Zeppelin recorded together. (Coda was a compilation of past recordings that didn't make the final cut in the other albums) Many people don't like "Out Door" because it is a departure from the Zeppelin that everyone knew and loved. But this departure is the reason that I like it so much. I believe it to be one of their best, and it gives you another look at Led Zeppelin's creativity and genius! "In Through the Out Door" August 15, 1979 is a great album, and shows off a different side of Led Zeppelin.

Tracks:
1.In the Evening
2.South Bound Suarez
3.Fool in the Rain
4.Hot Dog
5.Carouselambra
6.All My Love
7.I'm Gonna Crawl

"In Through the Out Door" begins, and you hear these eerie noises, like moans in the night. Then after about 1 minute of moans, Robert Plant crys out In the Eeeevning. Then the fun begins. A pretty heavy riff, complete with some whammy bar action, and a solid drum beat make up the bulk of the song. It kind of repeats itself, until the chorus, then you hear some keyboard from John Paul Jones as Robert Plant "Needs your Love." All of this leads up to Jimmy's solo, which has some good blues feeling, but at the same time, some heavy distortion making it sound mechanic. After the solo, it slows down a little into a kind of slow breakdown in the song, but then it gets in gear again for the rest of the song. "In the Evening" is a spectacular example of why Jimmy Page is one of the best song arrangers in the business (and Guitar players!). The next song, South Bound Suarez, is most likely an ode to New Orleans. Led Zeppelin spent a lot of time in that area and grew to enjoy it. I like the song because it gives off a fun atmosphere and makes you glee when you listen to it. The piano is the part that makes this song so good. The Piano work in it is very hidden, but if you listen past the guitar and the singing, you can hear a very fun piano beat. But my favorite song HAS to be Fool in the Rain. Fool in the Rain is easily one of Zeppelin's best, especially if you want to hear some good piano and vocals. The arrangement of the song, is like a man singing to his woman about their breakup and he is sad and confused about why she left. Then the song turns into a Samba like bridge. The piano and random whistles make it a treat to listen to. This makes to be one of the most memorable Led Zeppelin moments for me. I can't think of any Led Zeppelin song that I like better or had as much fun listening to! But as the song winds down, Jimmy Page plays a nice guitar solo and eventually the song ends at 6 minutes and 12 seconds. The song then explodes into Hot Dog. Hot Dog is probably the most odd Zeppelin song you will ever hear. But that is what makes it so fun to hear. There is a kind of Honky Tonk piano part and a ho-down guitar riff that makes you want to square dance. I love Robert's singing in this song, because he kind of has an Elvis or country feel. It makes for a very odd, but extrememly fun listening experience. The next song kind of reminds you of a Carousel ride. Hence the name Carouselambra. The keyboard in the song gives you that feel of spinning round and round and it brings you back to the fun times in life. This is another song that is just fun and happy. I love when it gets to the ending area, and the synth is even more present. It is one of the best songs on the album, and I really enjoy it. All My Love is one of the most beautiful Led Zeppelin songs ever. It combines the beauty of Keyboard/Synth and Robert Plant's beautiful vocals in the song. He sings in metaphors about love and it makes for a very moving song. Jimmy didn't like it because there wasn't a big guitar part in it, but I like the song very much. The last song on the album is I'm Gonna Crawl, which to me is the worst on the CD. It is kind of a bore until the solo in the middle. The solo is one to listen for though, because it is very bluesy and one of Jimmy's bluesiest, iest solo's. I think the rest of the song is a bit lacklustre, but the solo is worth it! Overall I think "In Through the Out Door" is a great album and I would give it a 4.6 out of 5.

I realised that I never really rated the albums before, so I will have a list on my next post, with ratings on every album, in order from worst to best. I could review Coda next, but I dont really know if I am going to only because it has repeats... I will review the songs that were original I guess... like the very exciting We're Gonna Groove.

Sorry about this guys... I have not posted in a LONG time... lots to talk about, but first thing is first... I must review Presence! Presence was a little bit of a slip up by Zeppelin, but still had some solid songs. Most of this album was written on the road, so it is a little lackluster. Presence(March 31, 1976) is still a good CD though. Led Zep cant go wrong!

Tracks:
1.Achilles Last Stand
2.For your Life
3.Royal Orleans
4.Nobody's Fault But Mine
5.Candy Store Rock
6.Hots on For Nowhere
7.Tea for One

Let me say one thing... Achilles Last Stand is absolutely AMAZING! I love that song as well as "Nobody's Fault".
Achilles Last Stand was written about the frantic life on the road. Robert Plant's lyrics reflect this. And the speed of the song is quick to say the least. It also never lets up. Everything about the song is great. I love the climbing crescendo in the opening riff. It just builds up until it explodes into hard rock! But after 10 minutes of Joy, we come to one of Zeppelin's worst songs. For Your Life is a pretty boring song about (Mainly ). I didn't really dig anything about the song, it is kind of boring with no real spark. But moving on, we see a glimmer of hope ahead. Royal Orleans is a fun song with a fun guitar riff to boot! It is just a happy song that brings life back into the album. But what really makes the album good is Nobody's Fault But Mine. It is easily one of the best Zep tunes, and probably one of the most catchy! The opening riff is very easy to get stuck in your head, and I find myself singing it a lot! That song definetly brings the album back! Next is Candy Store Rock. Another decent song, but not one of their better ones. It has a pretty good riff, but there is something missing, that doesn't share the same magic that most of their other songs do. I like Hots On For Nowhere a lot. That once again brings the album back a bit from the hole that Candy Store Rock dug. I love the La las in the song. Lastly, there is the cool, bluesy Tea For One. I like the song, it is a bit long but has a solid enough base to keep my attention. Robert's vocals are good, and Jimmy shreds the guitar too! Overall "Presence" is a good album, it is just hindered by some Sub-par songs. There are some songs that bring it back though, and make it worth the while! I enjoyed it, and any Ledhead will too! The next album up is the great In Through the Out Door!

Physical Graffiti...

Physical Graffiti

Sorry to my small fan base about the long time of me not posting. I have been doing other stuff this summer and haven't used the computer much. Well here I am, posting again. This time I am reviewing the AMAZING double album, Physical Graffiti! This is my absolute favorite CD of all time! Their is not one bad song (excluding Bron-Yr-Aur). Every one has something special and original to offer to the CD. It is just spectacular! Physical Graffiti (1975) has some of the best songs ever written on it!

Tracks:
(Disc one)
1.Custard Pie
2.The Rover
3.In my Time of Dying
4.Houses of the Holy
5.Trampled Underfoot
6.Kashmir
(Disc two)
1.In the Light
2.Bron-Yr-Aur
3.Down By the Seaside
4.Ten Years Gone
5.Night Flight
6.The Wanton Song
7.Boogie With Stu
8.Black Country Woman
9.Sick Again

Man oh man, does this have some excellent songs on it! Custard Pie and the Rover are just hard rocking and happy songs to listen to! In my time of Dying is possibly my favorite Zeppelin song! It is so moving, because it is about him trying to get into heaven, but they wont let him in. They arranged the song so that it matched with the lyrics... It is done extrememly well! Houses of the Holy is just another one of those happy songs. Same with Trampled Underfoot. Kashmir is an amazing song. One of the most recognizalbe riffs EVER! The song is true genius, lyrically and instumentally! Disc two is definitely more on the "experimental side". It has some songs that are departures from the normal Zeppelin. They give Zeppelin more depth though. That is why you can listen to Led Zepp over and over again! In the Light is a really cool song, after the weird synth. Bron-Yr-Aur seems a little lack-lustre. But the rest of the CD is great. I really like Night Flight, Down by the Seaside and Boogie with Stu. But Sick Again is my favorite on disc 2! It is so powerfull and hard rock. It just plain rocks... that is why I love it so much! That last sentence basically describes my review for Physical Graffiti. IT JUST ROCKS!! Presence is next!

Houses of the Holy...

Houses of the Holy

Houses of the Holy is a very good album. Probably #4-5 for my rating. I am actually probably under rating it, because I like the other ones so much. They are all so good, you can't really say which ones are better than others. But anyways... it is a wonderful album. Houses of the Holy (March 28, 1973) has some of their best songs on it and it is truly a masterpiece of an album.

Tracks:
1.The Song Remains the Same
2.The Rain Song
3.Over the Hills and Far Away
4.The Crunge
5.Dancing Days
6.D'yer Mak'er
7.No Quarter
8.The Ocean

Yet again, Led Zeppelin starts off their album with a great song. "The Song Remains the Same" has a wonderful intro. I really love Robert's singing in this song, because it is really filled with passion and you can tell through the music. I think the most underappreciated song on the album though is "The Rain Song." This song is so beautiful and is very nice to listen to. Especially when it kicks up. I love that song. Robert Plant sings it great, and the guitar is nicely done and soothing. Third on the album is, in my opinion, the best song on the album. "Over the Hills and Far Away" evokes a land in my head that can only be described as: something from a dream. It starts with a beautiful acoustic intro with soft, mellow lyrics about love. Then it turns into a hard rocking, kick ass song! The guitar riff is so catchy, and it makes me so happy when I listen to it. 4th is "The Crunge". Created by John Bonham and John Paul Jones, you know it is gonna be pretty awesome. You first hear some drums, followed by an awesomely catchy bassline. Then comes the funky, bluesy guitar riff. Robert then starts to sing the song, which really has no rhyme or reason. It has no chorus, it just goes on with great beats and rhythym. The fifth song on the album is a good one. "Dancing Days" begins with a good guitar riff and brings out that kind of happiness that you get from "Over the Hills". D'yer Mak'er is the next, which is a wonderful love song that I love to listen to whenever I need some smooth guitar and drums accompanied by some "Oh, oh oh oh, Oh oh"'s. No Quarter is probably my least favorite song on the album, only because it doesn't have the flair, like the rest of the songs on the album. I don't mind the song, but it just isn't the same for me. And staying true to the other 4 albums, "Houses of the Holy" finishes wonderfully with "The Ocean". The Ocean begins with a cool little vocal by John Bonham, then it just kicks into gear and rocks harder than any other song on the album! The guitar riff is perfect and extrememly catchy and Robert Plant's singing just makes you want to clap your hands and go "singing in the sunshine, laughing in the rain!" I love how the song is bridge with the "La la la's" and then it gets into hard rocking riff again. After it does that for a couple of times it gets into the solo which is excellent and I really enjoy hearing it. What a wonderful song to end on!

Well, that being said... "Houses of the Holy" is an amazing album, that after doing this I realize just how GREAT it is! It is "Sooo Gooood!"-The Ocean. The next album is my absolute favorite, and it is AMAZING. "Physical Graffiti" is next!

Which Led Zeppelin member are you most like? I am most like my Idol... Jimmy PAGE!!!

  • My #1 result for the SelectSmart.com selector, Which Led Zeppelin member are you most like?, is Jimmy Page - Dark & mysterious, at times, you're mainly misunderstood. People can sometimes overlook the side of you that isn't as prevalent, but is just as important to solidifying who you are. Yeah, you may have some out of the ordinary hobbies, but it doesn't make you a weirdo. You're talented & love to be in control.
